Procurement Skills That Will Get You Hired in 2026

May, 2026
Adam Richardson

Procurement in the UK construction sector is evolving fast. Traditional commercial skills remain essential, but the ability to understand, adopt, and apply AI and digital tools is becoming a core requirement at every level. So, which established capabilities matter most? and how should professionals think about using emerging technology to improve their value?

Commercial and Analytical Mindset

While price will always be important, procurement professionals now need to interpret value in a more nuanced and strategic way. Recent disruptions (think COVID, the Suez Canal blockage, Ukraine war, geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz…) have exposed how fragile global supply chains can be, and how significantly this fragility affects project delivery.

Employers want professionals who can:

  • assess whole-life value, not just upfront cost;
  • balance cost, risk, and value trade-offs;
  • build and interpret market, cost, and scenario models; and
  • apply value-engineering principles to optimise design and delivery.

Those who can think beyond the immediate transaction and understand the broader commercial environment stand out quickly.

Contract and Risk Expertise

The relationship between cost, risk, and value sits at the heart of successful construction procurement. Strong contracting capability is therefore a major differentiator.

Professionals increasingly need to demonstrate that they can:

  • analyse, price, and allocate risk effectively;
  • manage risk through appropriate contract mechanisms;
  • break down contractual implications for project teams in clear, practical language;
  • navigate NEC and JCT forms confidently; and
  • manage change processes and minimise claims.

Candidates who can show they have prevented issues, not just responded to them, tend to rise to the top of shortlists.

Strong Stakeholder and Supplier Relationships

Contracts cannot cover every scenario, and relying on them prescriptively is rarely the most efficient way to resolve challenges. In reality, strong relationships often avoid or de-escalate issues long before they become contractual.

However, increased reliance on digital communication has made some professionals more remote as they lean heavily on messaging, email, and video calls rather than building rapport in person.

As a result, employers are looking closely at whether candidates:

  • maintain active networks across suppliers and site teams;
  • engage stakeholders early to identify issues before they escalate;
  • have examples of driving supplier innovation; and
  • can demonstrate collaboration across commercial and operational teams.

Professionals who combine technical skill with hands-on engagement are becoming increasingly sought after.

AI, Digital, and Data Fluency

While relationship-building is becoming a key focus for hiring mangers, effective use of technology is now fundamental. Employers increasingly expect procurement specialists to be comfortable with:

  • eProcurement and analytics platforms;
  • dashboards and reporting tools such as Power BI and Tableau;
  • BIM-linked procurement workflows; and
  • Automation and AI-supported analysis.

The strongest candidates show how these tools have helped them make better commercial decisions, spot risks early, increase transparency and deliver measurable savings.

Because technology is evolving rapidly, professionals also need to show they are staying current—whether through training, industry press, events, or professional networks.

Digital fluency is no longer a “nice to have.” It is part of the job.

Conclusion

Construction procurement in 2026 rewards those who combine strong commercial foundations with adaptability, digital awareness, and strategic thinking. Traditional skills remain crucial, but the ability to navigate a volatile global supply chain and leverage digital tools now defines top performers.

As has always been the case, ultimately, talking about these skills is not enough. The professionals who get hired fastest are the ones who can clearly demonstrate their track record, showing not just what they know, but the value they deliver.
